Abbottstown, PA (August 17, 2024) โ Matt Campbell gave it everything he had on Saturday night to win the Barry Skelly Memorial. Campbell, who started the 30-lap feature in sixth, raced his way up to second with 10 laps to go, leaving him 10 laps to erase Chris Arnoldโs 4.6-second lead. With five laps to go, as Campbell was reeling Arnold in, smoke started billowing from the #X machine, but Matt didnโt let it slow him down. With three laps to go Campbell was all over Arnold, but would have to wait until the last corner of the last lap to make the pass for the lead. The $6,000 win was Campbellโs second at the track this season as he is in the hunt for the points title with Troy Wagaman and Freddie Rahmer.
Chris Arnold and Tim Glatfelter shared the front row for the drop of the green and current point leader, Troy Wagaman started dead last. Arnold and Glatfelter drag-raced into turn 1 as a massive crash developed behind them. JJ Loss flipped down the front stretch and his wing got stuck in the fence with the car landing on the track. Kyle Keen and Glenndon Forsythe got caught up in the melee as well, ending all three of their nights. Four other cars received damage on the start and headed to the pits under red, Troy Wagaman, Kody Hartlaub, Aaron Bollinger, and Jeff Rohrbaugh. Rohrbaugh was the only one not to rejoin the field for the restart.
The field lined up for a complete restart. This time the yellow came out when Chad Trout sat on the front stretch with a broken front end. After two restarts 14 of the original 19 cars lined up for the third try to get the feature started. The third time proved to be the charm with Arnold holding a slight advantage over Glatfelter as they raced into turn 1. Brandon Rahmer got under Brett Strickler to move into fourth and Campbell wasnโt far behind, getting by Strickler for fifth.
Arnold was pulling away from the field and had a straightway lead as Campbell was closing in on Brandon to challenge for fourth. Arnold had a 4-second lead and was closing in on lapped traffic with 10 laps down. The yellow flag came out on lap 11 when Hartlaub fell off the pace and came to a stop on the front stretch.
With Arnoldโs 3.4 second lead erased, Glatfelter, Hivner, Rahmer and Campbell lined up behind him for the restart. Hivner started falling back which allowed Campbell to move up to fourth, Brandon into third and Freddie Rahmer made his way into the top five.
Campbell got by Brandon for third coming off turn 2 to take the spot on lap 17. Campbell looked to make quick work of Glatfelter but it took four laps for Matt to find a way around Glatfelter.
Arnold had an impressive lead of 4.6 seconds with 10 laps to go. The crowd watched Campbell use the last 10 laps to reel in Arnold, half of them with smoke coming from the car. As Campbell made the pass for the lead coming out of turn 4 on the last lap, fans were on their feet to witness the finish.
In the end Campbell crossed the line .207 seconds ahead of Arnold. Freddie Rahmer finished third and Glatfelter was fourth. Brandon Rahmer completed the top five. Despite starting last and having to go to the pits during the initial red flag to change a top wing, Troy Wagaman earned hard charger honors with a seventh place finish.
Andy Best Wires 358 Sprint Field for Win
Andy Best beat pole-sitter Cameron Merriman to the first turn to take the lead at the start of the 20-lap feature and never looked back.
As Best took the top spot with Merriman in tow, Preston Lattomus and Jake Galloway were battling for third. Galloway had the spot when the red flag came out on lap 4 for Ayden Hare.
Best led Merriman, Galloway, Lattomus and Logan Rumsey on the restart. Lattomus got by Galloway to take third and then Rumsey followed sending Jake back to fifth. Steve Owings worked his way into the top five from his twelfth place starting spot after getting by Galloway on lap 8.
Cody Fletcher slowed to a stop in turn 4 bringing out the yellow on lap 9. The top five for the restart were Best, Merriman, Lattomus, Rumsey and Owings. Lattomus was working on Merriman for second when the yellow came out again on lap 11. This time it was for Cole Knopp who sat facing the wrong way in turn 4.
Merriman tried the bottom on the restart which left the top open for Lattomus. Preston gave it everything he had, but hopped the cushion in turn 4 allowing both Owings and Rumsey to get by, sending Lattomus back to fifth.
Best was pulling away from the field with five laps to go when the yellow came out one final time for Josh Harner and Olivia Thayer.
The top five for the final restart were Best, Merriman, Owings, Rumsey and Lattomus. Merriman left the top open for Owings on the restart and Owings took advantage and had second with two laps to go.
Best crossed the line 1.054 seconds ahead of Owings, who earned the hard charger bonus. Merriman finished third and Rumsey was fourth. Lattomus completed the top five.
