On Saturday, June 4, 2022 Lincoln Speedway will host the Inaugural Steve Smith Tribute Race. The race will be paying an impressive $19,000 to win in honor of the Black Bandit, driver of the famous #19 sprint car.
Smith moved from Florida to Pennsylvania in the early 1960s to start his racing career and what a career it would be. Smithโ€™s first win at Lincoln came on May 22, 1971 and just two short years later he earned his first track championship. From 1973 to 1978 Smith rattled off six straight championships at Lincoln. By the end of his storied career he had added three more titles in 1985, 1987 and 1991 to make it nine championships in the Pigeon Hills.
Smithโ€™s final win at Lincoln, win number 150, came on May 4, 1996.
Smith also saw success at Williams Grove, winning a track championship in 1989 and scoring three National Open wins. Steveโ€™s 259 career feature wins came at a variety of tracks including Lincoln, Williams Grove, Port Royal, Hagerstown, Susquehanna and many more.
Smith represented the PA Posse well against the touring series, winning six World of Outlaw features and racking up 17 All Star Circuit of Champions victories to his name.
In 2000 Smith was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
Steve Smith passed away at the age of 74 on June 5, 2021. Lincoln Speedway is honored to host this race in Smithโ€™s memory.
